JOB SUMMARY
The Certified Pathologists' Assistant is responsible for the routine daily specimen grossing workload as well as assisting with Frozen sections, EBUS and Bone Marrow procedures; and any specialized tests required by the pathologist to determine a diagnosis. The Certified Pathologists' Assistant works under the supervision of the Pathologist.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assure appropriate specimen accessioning
- Obtain pertinent clinical information and studies
- Describing gross anatomic features
- Dissection of surgical specimens
- Preparation and submission of tissue for histologic processing
- Obtaining and submitting specimens for additional analytical procedures (immunostaining, flow cytometry, microbiology cultures, toxicology, etc.)
- Gross specimen photography and photomicrography
- Describe, ink, and dissect tissue submitted for frozen section
- Freeze, section, and stain tissues
- Assist with EBUS and Bone Marrow procedures
- Perform autopsies including obtaining proper legal authorization and reviewing patient charts and other clinical data
- Dissect, describe and submit tissue for microscopic studies for autopsy cases
- Preliminary anatomic diagnosis completion
- Coordinate and facilitate digital slide scanning with pathologists
- Must be free from governmental sanctions involving health care and/or financial practices.
- Complies with the hospital's Corporate Compliance Program including, but not limited to, the Code of Conduct, laws and regulations, and hospital policies and procedures.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Education
- Bachelor of Science degree
- Completion of a National Accrediting Agency Clinical Laboratory Science Program (NAACLS)
- Licensure
- None
- Certifications required
- ASCP Certification, Certified Pathologists's Assistant (PA)
- Experience
- 1-2 years of Pathology Assistant experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- The ability to maintain continuing education requirements and all certifications and licenses as required (e.g. ACLS, PALS, CPI, CPR) to maintain professional license.
- Must have good interpersonal relationship skills for working with staff, physicians, co-workers and public.
- Ability to concentrate for long periods of time in the making of slides and performance of tests.
- Knowledge of test procedures, equipment setup and operations within assigned area.
- Ability to read and interpret data.
- Computer Knowledge including the ability to enter material into electronic record. Ability to operate fax, computer, and copy machine to perform the duties of the position.
