Chemical Engineer I

General Purpose:

Contributes to the development of new products, new processes, and optimizes process conditions to maximize material efficiencies. Completes process hazard assessments, equipment setup and operation, production run documentation, staff training, process scale-up, supply chain management, quality assurance, hazardous material shipments and new technology development.

Essential Functions:

Responsibilities that are requirements in order to perform the job:

  • Participates on customer facing projects
  • Plans and conducts experiments to demonstrate new concepts
  • Provides direction to Engineering Aides and laboratory staff to complete assigned tasks
  • Prepares and plans laboratory scale process development activities
  • Contributes to the design & implementation capital projects
  • Prepares plans and documentation to produce new materials, including operating procedures, engineering drawings, raw material and equipment specifications, batch data sheets, process safety reviews, chemical hazard assessments, and quality assurance procedures
  • Records experimental work accurately and maintains up-to-date records
  • Transitions laboratory scale processes to kilo lab scale
  • Contributes to project status reports/presentations as appropriate
  • Proactively seeks advice from internal/external resources for technical approaches and safe work practices
  • Develops an area of expertise for which peers seek guidance
  • Analyzes data and applies statistical methods
  • Stays up to date with new and emerging chemical processing techniques
  • Demonstrates creativity in solving challenging problems
  • Demonstrates commitment, dependability and respect with regular attendance and punctuality



Supportive Functions:

In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of supportive functions based on business needs:

  • Assists with maintaining process equipment
  • Provides formal training for operating staff
  • Participates in safety program activities and presentations
  • Maintains awareness of how the position supports the Quality Management System, and participates in quality related activities such as audits and quality improvement teams as necessary
  • Ensures that chemical inventories are well maintained
  • Conducts physical inventory checks for materials and equipment



Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Proficiency in Minitab or equivalent statistical analysis software
  • Motivated and results oriented
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good attention to detail and keen observation skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain thorough, accurate records
  • Good chemical process equipment design and operational knowledge

Education/Experience Guidelines:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related field or equivalent experience
  • 0-3 years of related experience
  • Experience with chemical reactions, distillation, separation and purification methods, batch and continuous processing
