Engineering - Chemist Intern

SUMMARY

This position with be in the chemical lab of an aerospace manufacturer performing chemical analysis of incoming raw materials, in-process materials, wastewater, and of process/product samples. The position will use laboratory equipment such as gas chromatography, UV/VIS, IR, and AA spectrophotometry. Procedures will include titrations, ph measurements, turbidity measurements, electrical conductivity measurements, specific gravity readings, temperature readings, and weightings. Since the position is tied to production processes some availability on Mondays and Wednesdays is important.

The intern will assist Engineering in daily duties, which may include a variety of the below tasks; as well as additional duties deemed necessary for Engineering or for the growth and exposure of the student:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: which may include the following. Other duties may also be assigned.

  • Manages multiple projects.
  • Perform chemical analysis as needed by production.
  • Perform material property analysis as needed.
  • Ensure chemical processes are in compliance with company, industry, and regulatory standards.
  • Cost reduction initiatives.
  • May develop technical documents such as process specifications, test procedures, test reports, etc.
  • Involvement in various Engineering meetings.
  • Provides Engineering support for various production issues.
  • Communicates and works with Assembly Departments and various floor personnel on various projects.
  • Complies with and conducts business in accordance with the letter, spirit, and intent of all relevant laws and regulations, policies, work procedures, instructions; wherefore, refrains from any illegal, dishonest, unethical conduct. Maintains communications with all employees, vendors, customers and others in a cooperative and professional manner, while treating them in with dignity, respect and courtesy.
  • Performs other related duties as required and that may be assigned.

  • Critical Skills and Abilities:
  • Communication: Effective strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly present information to internal and external customers. Ability to interpret and create component or assembly drawings to common industry standards
  • Detail oriented: Ability to perform work and job function with precision and accuracy, realizing that errors can have significant impact on desired results; systematically monitors processes and progress of projects, maintaining documentation records.
  • Work habits: Ability to work independently and be self-motivated, assuming ownership of multiple assigned projects in a fast-paced environment, but also possesses the ability to collaborate with other Engineers and Department members as needed.
  • Computer literate: Microsoft Windows environment -- MS Office, MathCAD, and/or similar.
  • This position must meet "US Person" Export Control Requirements as defined by 22 CFR 120.62 - "US Person means a person who is a lawful permanent resident as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1101(a)(20) or who is a protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)." ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, SKILLS, and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Education: Currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree Program in Chemistry or a related field at an accredited school.


REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, electronic, drawing, diagram, or schedule form.
