- Performs waived and up to moderate complexity testing on manual, automated, semi-automated platforms, processes specimens and specimen setup per department policy and procedure, and assists CLS, HT, and CT with daily operation; performs instrument maintenance, quality control and troubleshooting; performs Laboratory Assistant function, and shares skills intra-departmentally.

- Education
- Required: High school diploma, GED or higher degree
- Preferred: Associate's Degree in Science in related field
- Licensure/Certification
- Experience
- Required: One (1) year of relevant work experience in a laboratory or hospital or Associate's degree in related field or higher in lieu of experience if hired after January 1, 2023
- Preferred: Anatomic pathology laboratory experience
- Essential Responsibilities
- Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
- Orders and processes laboratory requests in accordance with established procedures.
- Collects and processes all necessary paperwork, assuring appropriate reporting
- Assists in ordering, maintaining, and restocking of supplies
- Answers telephone and responds to questions or directs call to appropriate individual
- Utilizes Laboratory Information System as appropriate
- Disinfects and maintains work areas as needed
- Assists CLS, HT, CT in performing preventative maintenance and quality control procedures.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the operation and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and instrumentation with direction from the CLS, HT, CT
- Performs pre-analytic non-technical test setup.
- Assist in the orientation and training of Medical Laboratory Scientist Students and Medical Fellows.
- Performs waived testing as directed by the department lead, supervisor, manager or director
- Complies with hospital and Laboratory safety policies and procedures
- Complies with all State and federal regulations.
- In addition to the above responsibilities, department specific duties include:
- Cytology: Fine needle aspirate scheduling, prepare Cytology preparations and staining
- Histology: Assists Pathologists and Pathologists' Assistant with gross specimen procedures; performs frozen section and assists with autopsies when necessary; files pathology slides and blocks and retrieve them from offsite archiving locations; send out and receive pathology slides and blocks; assist Histotech, Pathologists Assistants, and Pathologists with pre and post testing functions under the direction of the department supervisor, lead, manager or director.
- Microbiology: Reviews specimen test selection for correct collection and appropriate test selection; Performs Microbiology specimen setup consisting of selection of appropriate media and incubation environment; aliquots shared specimens, with distribution to appropriate department.
- Transfusion Services: Picks up blood samples from, and delivers blood components to patient locations throughout the hospitals; Checks patient history for evidence of antibodies, prior treatment history, previous ABO and Rh and autologous unit availability; Thaws FFP and Cryo, and dispenses all blood products through the computer; Assists in signing out blood to Nursing Services; Performs daily inventory, orders products as needed; Picks up blood totes from patient areas.
- ED STAT Lab: Assist in Transfusion Services as directed by the Supervisor, Lead, or CLS.
- Triage: Researches and performs reference lab specimen send outs; Assist and backup for the in house Reference Laboratory coordinator; Specimen prep and test setup for automation, flow and immunology departments.
