JOB OVERVIEW: Cancer Registrars collect the data that provides essential information to researchers, healthcare providers, and public health officials to monitor better and advance cancer treatments, conduct research, and improve cancer prevention and screening programs. 

  

By collecting the data that makes up the cancer history of each cancer patient, information can be provided to researchers, healthcare providers, and public health officials to help: 

 

·         Monitor cancer trends over time

·         Evaluate cancer patterns in populations and identify high-risk groups

·         Guide planning an evaluation of cancer control programs

·         Set priorities for allocating health resources

·         Study cancer causes and prevention strategies

 

Cancer Registrars work closely with physicians, administrators, researchers, and healthcare planners to support cancer program development, ensure compliance with reporting standards, and serve as a valuable resource for cancer information to prevent and control cancer. (National Cancer Registrars Association, n.d.)

 

·      Cancer registry data is vital to the cancer center's daily operations, process improvement, benchmarking, and improving the quality of cancer care delivery. 

·      Cancer Registrars must maintain proficiency in anatomy/physiology, health information technology, registry-specific software, and knowledge of various rules on data collection rules is essential.  

REQUIRED SKILLS: Cancer registries are data information systems that manage and analyze data on cancer patients and survivors. Cancer registries ensure health officials have accurate and timely information on cancer incidence, treatment, and survivorship. (National Cancer Registrars Association, n.d.)

 

The Cancer Registrar Lead position reports directly to the Cancer Program Manager, HIM Director, or as deemed by the facility and to the AMN Workforce Manager/Account Manager.

 

Key responsibilities of the role may include (depending upon the need):

·       Perform QA on our Team and monitor productivity and if time allows, the Lead will abstract cases as well. 

·       Perform casefinding

·       Abstract cases

·       Manage the cancer registry database

·       Perform routine quality audits based on facility need or AMN policy

·       Report the findings of the quality audits to the facility and the Workforce Manager

·       Participate in further educating/mentoring ODS staff in areas where quality is less than ideal

·       Monitor the productivity of each ODS team member (AMN and internal employees, if needed)

·       Assist ODS staff with ways to boost productivity

·       Understand the specific standards/rules in place at the state level, SEER, or CoC levels

·       Run customized reports  

·       Analyze and present data 

·       Track patient survival data

·       Upload data to state and Rapid Cancer Reporting System (RCRS)/National Cancer Database (NCDB) promptly

·       Review NCDB quality measures for registry data accuracy

·       Attend Cancer Conference and/or Cancer Committee, if needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

    ·       Required Minimum Experience: 2 years as an Oncology Data                                                   Specialist (ODS), *previously Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR)

·       Required Minimum Education: A proficient understanding of medical terminology, human anatomy, and the cancer disease process.  ** ODS must achieve passing scores on RCS cancer registry pre-employment assessment, and interview with the Workforce Manager.

·       Confidence in using and understanding of all standard setter manuals (STORE, SEER, AJCC, etc) as required for data collection items)

·       Preferred Experience: State reporting and CoC accredited facility reporting, SEER and NCI designated facility experience a plus. 

·       Provide excellent customer service and communication (verbal and written).

·       Attention to detail and organizational skills.  Must be able to multi-task. 

·       Strong working knowledge of various registry software, patient EMRs, Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and learning new software as required. 

·       Display a high level of energy and thrive in a fast-paced environment.  Self-        motivated and able to work independently and as a member of a team. 

·       Ability to plan and prioritize workload and meet deadlines. 

·     Experience working w/ CNExT and EPIC

     


# OF WEEKS: 26 weeks

SHIFT/HOURS: 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift available Central Time Zone Flexible

EXPECTED HOURS: FT M-F business hours Central Time Zone – some flexibility - 1st, 2nd, OR 3rd shifts are available.                   

LICENSE/CREDENTIALS REQ: Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) * previously Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) permitted.

SYSTEMS: CNExT & EPIC.

NOTES: Will be a long-term 6mo project for the right fit.
