LIFE Pittsburgh is a P rogram of A ll Inclusive C are for the E lderly program (PACE) that creates a comprehensive care environment (social and medical) for those who would typically be homebound or living in a nursing home. Employing 350+ employees, LIFE Pittsburgh arranges a full array of health and social services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. A health team of geriatric doctors, nurses, social workers, rehabilitation specialists and other health care professionals assesses our Participants' needs and desires, plans and approves services with them and their family or caregiver, monitors for changes and provides timely interventions. Primary care and community services are provided through the Day Health Center and through our in-home program according to an individual Participant's needs. LIFE Pittsburgh currently operates (5) Interdisciplinary Teams out of (4) locations within Allegheny County and is currently serving over 550 Participants.

Job Summary: Medical Director, LIFE Pittsburgh

The Medical Director serves as the driving force behind LIFE Pittsburgh's clinical operations, providing visionary medical leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality, person-centered care to Participants. This position plays a critical role in shaping the organization's clinical strategy, fostering innovative care models, and promoting long-term sustainability of the PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) model. The Medical Director oversees physicians, nurse practitioners, and other medical staff to maintain clinical excellence across all LIFE Pittsburgh sites, ensuring that care aligns with best practices, regulatory standards, and community needs.

Collaborating closely with the Leadership Team and Interdisciplinary Teams (IDTs), the Medical Director ensures comprehensive, participant-focused care that enhances dignity, independence, and quality of life. This forward-thinking leader will champion initiatives that improve clinical outcomes, adapt to changing healthcare landscapes, and support LIFE Pittsburgh's mission of maintaining participant well-being. The role requires a commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and respect within the organization.

Job Responsibilities and Standards:

The Medical Director demonstrates a deep commitment to LIFE Pittsburgh's mission by driving clinical initiatives that improve Participant outcomes, enhance care delivery, and promote organizational growth. Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing clinical oversight to physicians, nurse practitioners, and medical staff to ensure high standards of care at each LIFE Pittsburgh site.
  • Leading the development and implementation of innovative care models that support Participant independence and quality of life.
  • Ensuring clinical services align with regulatory compliance, best practices, and the evolving needs of the community.
  • Collaborating with the Leadership Team to shape organizational strategy and support the long-term sustainability of the PACE model.
  • Partnering with Interdisciplinary Teams to deliver comprehensive care that addresses medical, social, and emotional needs.
  • Championing a culture of dignity, respect, and professionalism across all clinical operations.


This leadership role requires a forward-thinking, adaptable individual dedicated to advancing LIFE Pittsburgh's mission while navigating the complexities of today's healthcare environment. The Medical Director will inspire excellence, promote accountability, and ensure LIFE Pittsburgh remains a leader in providing innovative, participant-focused care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Oversight & Leadership
    • Provide clinical leadership to the Primary Care Providers (PCP) and interdisciplinary team (IDT) to ensure Participants receive appropriate, high-quality medical care.
    • Ensures the collaboration between clinical staff and other disciplines to develop and implement care plans that address the medical, functional, and psycho-social needs of Participants.
    • Ensures PCP's are conducting regular evaluations of Participants' health status and modify care plans accordingly.
    • Responsible for the assembling and maintaining of a network of contracted medical providers who meet the needs of the PPT's and follow the PACE philosophy/regulations.
    • Responsible for oversight of PCP's to ensure proper diagnosing, coding, documentation, etc to ensure appropriate Medicare payments are received.
  • Management of Physicians and CRNPs
    • Directly supervise and mentor the medical staff, including physicians and CRNPs.
    • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, and retention of medical staff, ensuring the team has the skills and experience necessary to meet Participant needs.
    • Develops and implements performance evaluations for physicians and CRNPs, including peer review and feedback processes.
    • Provide clinical guidance and ensure adherence to best practices, protocols, and regulatory requirements in all areas of medical care.
    • Conduct regular team meetings with physicians and CRNPs to discuss Participant care, case reviews, and operational updates.
    • Ensure continuing education and professional development opportunities for medical staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and high standards of care.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance
    • Ensure compliance with PACE program regulations and standards, including federal, state, and local requirements.
    • Works close with and collaborate on quality improvement initiatives, including review of clinical outcomes, Participant safety measures, and Participant satisfaction.
    • Participate in audits, accreditation processes, and reporting as required by regulatory bodies.
    • Responsible for administrative and clinical aspects of Part D administration
    • Ensures up-to-date medical records for each participant, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and other applicable regulations.
  • Education & Training
    • Provide ongoing education and training to PACE clinical staff on topics such as geriatric care, chronic disease management, and palliative care.
    • Mentor and guide clinical team members, fostering professional development and best practices in medical care.
    • Stay current on medical advancements, especially in geriatric and palliative care, and integrate new knowledge into clinical practice.
  • Participant Advocacy
    • Advocate for participants' health and well-being, promoting a holistic approach to care that includes social, emotional, and environmental factors.
    • Serve as a liaison between participants, families, and healthcare providers to ensure that participants' medical and personal needs are met.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Board certification in geriatrics, family medicine, internal medicine, or a related specialty.
  • Valid medical license to practice in the state of Pennsylvania.
  • At least 5 years of clinical experience, preferably in geriatric care, palliative care, or chronic disease management.
  • Proven experience managing and mentoring physicians and nurse practitioners.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of PACE program regulations and the ability to ensure compliance.


Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Experience with Medicare/Medicaid regulations.
  • Familiarity with quality improvement processes and metrics in healthcare settings.


Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team-based care model.
