Responsibilities

The Full-Time Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Technician will be responsible for performing pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phases of testing necessary for the daily operation of the laboratory as assigned by the laboratory manager. This position performs only those point of care and moderate complex tests that are authorized by the Laboratory Manager and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual education, training or experience and technical abilities. The position also requires phlebotomy experience, knowledge of laboratory procedures, excellent communication skills and customer service skills. These duties include (but are not limited to):

Specimen collection and processing:

  • Collecting viable and appropriate specimens from patients
  • Producing, maintaining and destroying the appropriate documentation for specimen collection and tracking
  • Sending specimens to reference laboratories for any testing not performed in-house.

Inventory:

  • Maintaining adequate inventory of laboratory supplies
  • Ensuring that all supplies are viable before use in patient testing
  • The rotation of stock so that the oldest material is used first

Safety:

  • Guaranteeing that the safety procedures outlined in the safety manual are followed
  • Ensuring that Medical waste is properly disposed
  • Maintaining a safe and clean work environment (waiting room, patient restrooms, phlebotomy draw areas and laboratory)

Point of Care Tests and Moderate Complex Tests:
The Medical Laboratory Technologist performs all tests that are authorized by the laboratory manager and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience and technical abilities. For point of care testing, the point of care medical laboratory assistant is responsible for the following:

  • Following the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses and reporting and maintaining records of patient test results
  • Maintaining records that demonstrate the proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Adhering to the laboratory's quality control policies and documenting that all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance are performed
  • Following the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance
  • Being capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correcting the problems or immediately notifying the technical or clinical consultant or director
  • Documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications:

Other:

  • Any other tasks deemed appropriate and assigned by the laboratory manager

Specific Requirements

  • Medical Laboratory Technologist: 4 year degree and certification is preferred; or
  • Medical Laboratory Technician: 2 year degree and certification
  • Phlebotomy Skills / Experience
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures
  • Fine motor skills necessary to operate the computer and laboratory equipment
  • Electronic health records experience preferred
  • The ability to stand up most of the day, stretch repeatedly over the counter and lift loads of less than 10 pounds
  • Good communication skills, problem solving ability, independent judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to prioritize and develop workflow.
  • Ability to perform other assigned tasks
