Location: San Diego Naval Medical Center, CA
Work Schedule:

  • Services shall be provided Sunday through Saturday, between the hours of 0600 to 1830.
  • HCWs will be scheduled for no more than 6 weekends (Saturday and/or Sunday) per year.
  • Shifts will normally be scheduled for an 8.5-hour shift, including an uncompensated 30-minute meal break.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree: Master's Degree
  • Education: Graduate from a medical physics, radiological physics, health physics, or physics program accredited by CAMPEP.
  • Certification: Board eligible or certified in diagnostic medical physics, nuclear medical physics, or therapeutic medical physics from the American Board of Radiology or medical health physics from the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP).
  • Experience: One year of experience within the last two years as a Medical Physicist.

Core Duties:

  • Maintain calibration of all treatment machines and radiation sources.
  • Provide clinical expertise in purchasing new radiation therapy equipment and upgrading existing equipment.
  • Perform acceptance testing, commissioning, calibration, and periodic quality assurance of radiation therapy equipment.
  • Measure and analyze beam data for treatment machines and ensure accurate entry into the treatment planning system.
  • Collaborate with the treatment planning team to establish procedures.
  • Determine radiation dose distributions for patients, ensuring accuracy of plans, dosimetry calculations, and documentation in patient charts.
  • Operate and ensure the functionality of technologies such as Virtual Wedge, EPID, Digital Reconstructed Radiographs, Virtual Simulation, Multileaf Collimation, Tomotherapy, Stereotactic Radiation therapy, and High Dose Rate Brachytherapy.
  • Ensure compliance with radiation monitoring, quality assurance, and safety requirements.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Must meet BLS requirements per section 1.6.12.8.
  • Possess a master's or doctoral degree in physics, medical physics, biophysics, radiological physics, medical health physics, or equivalent discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • Certification from the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Medical Physics, Radiologic Physics, the American Board of Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology Physics, or the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine in Radiation Oncology Physics.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience within the preceding 5 years as a Therapeutic Medical Physicist.

Additional Duties:

  • Oversee beam data measurement and analysis, ensuring accurate data entry into the treatment planning system.
  • Assist in establishing and overseeing treatment planning and delivery procedures.
  • Conduct quality assurance checks after maintenance of treatment machines.
  • Provide education and training for dosimetrists, radiation therapists, nurses, and technical staff.
  • Advise on the development and maintenance of quality assurance procedures.
  • Perform and oversee all radiation monitoring, quality assurance, and safety requirements.
  • Assist in simulations, treatment planning, and brachytherapy procedures.
  • Participate in scheduled weekly chart rounds, quality impact, and quarterly Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) meetings.
  • Manage Local Area Network Servers and data management systems.
  • Maintain calibration of all radiation oncology equipment.
