MSC Referral Coordinator Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant (MA) is a multi-skilled health professional who works interdependently with other health care professionals to provide quality health care to the patient. The Medical Assistant (MA) will be responsible for performing both administrative and clinical skills in the Orchard Hospital Medical Specialty Center environment. The MA will perform all patient care duties under the direction of a physician. The MA will have the primary responsibility of coordinating and monitoring prescription refills for all providers at the Medical Specialty Center. The Medical Assistant will be responsible for becoming familiar with not only Orchard Hospital policies & procedures, but also MSC policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Graduate from an approved Medical Assistant Program which identifies both clinical and classroom instruction sufficient to meet state requirements.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services; this includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • One year experience required.
  • Understanding of basic medical terminology.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Certificate of Completion from an approved Medical Assistant program.
  • Current health provider BLS card.


Job Requirements (20% of Evaluation Score)

  1. Checks the refill line for messages hourly;
  2. Endeavors to answer refill line live;
  3. Checks prescription boxes throughout the day as needed for prescription refill requests;
  4. Distributes and enters all requests into the EMR;
  5. Facilitates the prescription prior authorization process;
  6. Telephones, faxes or mails prescription refills to pharmacy per medical provider authorization;
  7. Answer each phone call in a cheerful, welcoming and professional manner;
  8. Refer unusual or difficult situations to charge nurse;
  9. Is polite and efficient in assisting patients in obtaining the information a patient needs or sending them to the person that can help them;
  10. Demonstrates competency in EMR, Excel and Microsoft Outlook;
  11. Attends and participates in regularly scheduled general staff meetings as directed;
  12. Communication skills using appropriate medical terminology;
  13. Following appropriate legal, ethical, and professional conduct;
  14. Participates in quality assurance and procedure improvement;
  15. Assists in prescription call in as needed;
  16. Maintains strictest confidentiality; adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations.
  17. Listens to voice mail a minimum of twice each shift and returns patient phone calls on a daily basis. Maintain a log of all phone calls received and returned.
  18. Check Orchard Hospital e-mail a minimum of once each shift and respond appropriately.
  19. Assist physicians with patient teaching as it is appropriate;
  20. Aid in identifying the overall learning needs of the patient;
  21. Being aware of and supporting the psychosocial, spiritual, religious, and cultural needs of the patient;
  22. Using CPR when required;
  23. Practicing OSHA safety standards;
  24. Performing accurate, legal, and ethical documentation of all patient care activities at all times.
