Housekeeper- Surgical Services

General Summary:

Performs housekeeping/custodial duties by maintaining the Department of Surgical Services in a safe, clean, sanitary and orderly condition. A sign on bonus of $1,500 is available. This is an on-call, every other weekend position, with no regular scheduled hours.

Essential Job Functions*:

  • Complies with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations and standards as related to job.
  • Demonstrates hospital's stated mission and values with co-workers, patients, families and visitors.
  • Actively and appropriately participates in problem-solving identification and resolution, both intra- and inter-departmentally.
  • Meets department customer service standards and strives to enhance the level of customer service provided.
  • Cleans assigned areas using a variety of supplies, equipment and cleaning solutions in accordance with departmental standards, policies and procedures.
  • Cleans, prepares and sets up patient operating and procedure rooms in a timely manner, minimizing turnover times when applicable. This includes making the operating room bed, ensuring trash and dirty linen are removed, replacing hamper and trash can liners, and cleaning all equipment, floors, and vertical surfaces in accordance with policy.
  • Sets up certain equipment and devices as required by the nursing staff.
  • Cleans, strips and waxes corridors and floors within the surgical services environment.
  • Arranges and places equipment in operating rooms when cleaning complete according to pre-established diagram
  • Operates required cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, dry/wet mops and various types of cleaning equipment.
  • Practices safe handling of infectious waste in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Cleans other rooms as assigned, wearing appropriate protective clothing and following specialized procedures as established by Environmental Services Department.
  • Orders/obtains cleaning equipment and supplies as needed to maintain uninterrupted operations
  • Replenishes supplies such as soap, alcohol foam, toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, etc. in areas of use
  • Transports laundered scrubs from linen room and stocks scrub shelves
  • Removes soiled linen and trash from the surgical suite to the basement collection area
  • Secures sharps, biohazard, and reprocessing/recycling containers, transports them to receiving area, and replaces them with empty ones
  • Watches for end of surgical procedures and positions gurney/hospital bed outside the door for post-operative patient transfer
  • Uses the Cleaning Grid established by departmental policy to follow frequency of cleaning, special circumstances, and other considerations
  • Assists with cleaning in ambulatory surgery area when requested.
  • Various other duties as assigned.
  • Rotate on-call every other weekend and holidays


Qualifications:

  • Education


Required: High school graduate or equivalent.

Preferred: Same

  • Work Experience


Preferred: 1-3 years experience in Environmental Services

  • Other Skills/Knowledge


Required: Good interpersonal and communication skills. Must be able to work independently to complete assigned duties.

Preferred: Previous environmental services experience in a healthcare setting.
