Job Description

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Serves as a collaborative member of the group of PA's working under the Department of Surgery. Obtain patient's admission history and review of systems on both inpatients and ambulatory care patient (including General Surgery, Urology, Orthopedic, Bariatric, Plastic Surgery clinics, ED and In-patient units)
2. Submit written data to supervising physician for his/her co-signature.
3. Conduct and record the physical examination on all new inpatients and on long term and ambulatory care
patients as ordered by supervising attending.
4. Follow inpatients on a daily basis and recognize and report to supervising physician both gross and subtle clinical changes.
5. Record notes on all procedures performed by the Physician Assistant in patient's hospital electronic medical record (EPIC system.)
6. Gather specimens for the performance of specific procedures, including but not necessarily limited to: Drawing blood for testing: collection of urine: obtaining bacteriologic smears: collecting sputum for staining and obtaining other culturable materials; perform vital capacity assessment, administer oxygen; perform incision and drainage; wound care and debridgement; naso-gastric and naso-tracheal intubation; gastric lavage; routine suturing of lacerations; skin biopsies; placing indwelling arterial catheters and making blood gas determinations; applying and removing casts and traction apparatus; starting lV solutions and administering lV medication, schedule laboratory tests and special procedures as requested by physician.
7. Under special circumstances and at the request of a physician, transport written requisitions, blood samples and other laboratory specimens to appropriate department.
8. Monitor patients' chart for returned test results, and to follow-up accordingly with established policy or protocol for physician notification and/or patient.
9. Assist surgeon in operating room.
10. Assist supervising physician and perform specific tasks when requested.
11. The physician Assistant may write orders for a patient who is under the care of a supervising physician.
12. Orders written should be counter signed by the supervising physician within 24 hours. Counter signatures by
13. Assist the supervising physicians shall not be required prior to the execution of an order
14. Acts at the direction of an in conjunction with the Chairman of Perioperative Services to develop and monitor performance improvement goals.
15. Is prompt and responsive to informational requests of the Chairman of Perioperative Services and other hospital departments and hospital leadership.
16. Performs other duties as assigned by the Chairman of Perioperative Services, Chief Medical Officer or designees.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Current New York State registration as a Physician Assistant; and,
2. Current certification issued by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA); and,
3. Two years of full time, satisfactory clinical experiences as a Physician Assistant.
