Assists in and performs the following therapeutic and diagnostic regimes: medical gases and environmental control systems, application and monitoring of mechanical ventilator support, artificial airway insertion, care or management, bronchopulmonary hygiene, pharmacological agents related to respiratory care procedures, protocol driven care, manual resuscitation and airway management, pulmonary rehabilitation, performs test and studies of the cardiopulmonary system, obtains physiological specimens and interprets physiological data. Selected RTs may also perform various procedures, as indicated in Essential Duties and RCP Competency Level.

Associate Degree in: Respiratory Therapy

LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Licensure to be eligible to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) in the State of Wisconsin.
Current BLS and/or CPR certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross or the ability of obtain certification within 6 weeks of hire.
Current NRP certification from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the ability of obtain certification within 6 weeks of hire.
Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care or eligible to sit for the registry exam.
Registry credential must be completed within 12 months of hire date.
Graduation from an accredited school of Respiratory Care.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED
Ability to read, write, hear, speak, and comprehend the English language.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
RCP 1:
PFT's - With Body Box in Pulmonary Clinic (Not included in RCP 2-5)
EKG's - With hospital EKG machine
Maintains appropriate documentation, both written and in MIS, for all diagnostic and therapeutic services.
Receives and records verbal orders from licensed independent practitioners for orders that are specific to the services provided by their department.
Fit Testing - Set-up training with EHS
BLS - Maintained bi-yearly
RCP 2:
All the competencies of an RCP 1
Bedside Spirometry - Easy One Air Handheld Spirometer in RT Department.
ABG's - Completed competency for arterial puncture with RT.
ED and Floor therapies - to include nebulizer treatments and MDI with spacer; administered medications in a timely manner, safely and in accordance with policy and procedures.
Provides appropriate therapeutic application of medical gases and environmental control systems (cannula, HFNC, Venturi Mask, NRB, oxymask, vapotherm, airvo, bipap, Cpap, or ventilator), chest PT, NT suctioning, sputum sampling, ABG draw, transporting patients to and from CT/MRI with respiratory equipment.
Preparation for and assisting with intubation - set up Glidescope with blade and stylet (Lube stylet and place into ETT), BVM patient, colorimetric/ETCO2 monitor, prepare ETT, syringe, lube, Hollister, and put settings into ventilator.
Provide artificial airway care and management, including insertion of airways in emergent situations.
RCP 3:
All the competencies of an RCP 1 and RCP 2
ICU coverage - able to understand and change ventilator settings, can set-up and use all respiratory equipment (Ventilators (G5, C1, rental vents), Bipaps (V60 and Vision, G5/C1 in NIV mode, Airvo set-up and changes, Vapotherm set-up and changes, troubleshoot alarms on equipment).
Nursery Coverage - Assist with deliveries in OR, ED, and bedside. Set-up ventilator for ventilation by ETT and RAM cannula, place patient on ventilator, maintain settings, suction neonate via bulb syringe or suction catheter, set-up for intubation and assist. (Know what size ETT and blade to use and how to tape ETT) colorimetric, where to place SpO2 monitor probe, Vapotherm set-up and place on patient with proper size cannula, troubleshoot when needed, assist with surfactant delivery, transport neonate from OR to Nursery.
Respiratory Consults - Assess patient for multiple respiratory therapies.
How to place orders in EPIC via verbal readback.
NRP - maintained bi-yearly.
RCP 4:
All the competencies of RCP 1, RCP 2, and RCP 3.
Setting up and Assisting with Bronchoscopies - prepare for bronchoscopies done in OR, GI Lab, Fluoroscopy, and bedside. Be able to handle preparation of samples (Mycobacteria, Cultures, Cytology, and Pathology) chart and charge in EPIC.
New employee preceptor - Check off new employee on respiratory competencies.
Intern preceptor - Preceptor for Interns from starting to graduation.
Professional education - be able to train staff on new products, equipment, and processes.
RCP 5:
All competencies of RCP1, RCP2, RCP3, and RCP 4.
Intubations - Insertion and management of endotracheal airways when designated training and competency are completed in Sim Lab, OR, and floor intubations; Medical Staff to complete check off.
