Overview
The Genome Informatics team at Illumina is seeking a talented bioinformatics scientist to help us develop insightful informatics tools and analyses to bring about the next breakthroughs in the clinical application of DNA sequencing. Our team works on a broad portfolio of projects, from evaluating and deriving value from emerging technologies, such as Constellation Mapped Reads, to extending the clinical utility of DNA sequencing through innovative bioinformatics solutions. With a focus on early R&D, our group is looking for new concepts that will enable leaps in performance or access to biological information previously deemed inaccessible. Through extensive internal and external collaborations, we identify and pursue the most impactful opportunities, apply our methods to unique datasets, and ensure that our solutions have global reach through integration into Illumina's world leading bioinformatics platform.
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented individual with strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset who is excited to explore new concepts and develop innovative solutions in a fast-paced research environment. The position requires a strong background in both statistics and algorithm development. A solid understanding of population and clinical genetics is also ideal. Responsibilities
- Conceptualization and implementation of novel algorithms for analysis of DNA sequencing data
- Evaluation and algorithm development for emerging sequencing technologies
- Design and implementation of studies demonstrating the performance and clinical utility of novel algorithmic solutions
- Statistical analysis of large sequencing datasets
- Communication of complex technical concepts at different levels both internally and externally through both presentations and manuscripts
- Collaboration with assay scientists, clinical geneticists, and computational scientists to deliver end-to-end solutions
- Identification of high impact opportunities for bioinformatics solutions through collaboration and keeping up with literature
Background, skills and experience required
- MS or PhD in bioinformatics, statistics, computer science, genetics or related field of study
- Strong understanding of statistical methods and algorithm development
- Proficiency in R, Python, C++ or other mainstream programming language
- Strong communication skills and ability to describe complex analyses to a wide audience
- Solid understanding of population, clinical, or cancer genetics is ideal
- Experience analyzing next generation sequencing data is preferred
- Familiarity with variant detection and other common bioinformatics algorithms is preferred
The estimated base salary range for the Senior Bioinformatics Scientist role based in the United States of America is: $126,800 - $190,200. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
