Senior Chemist

CSS has a need for Senior Chemist for our EPA mobile laboratory program, in our Emergency Response and Disaster Recovery division, located in Castle Rock.

The primary function of the mobile laboratories is to provide on-site and remote chemical analysis during an Incident of National Significance - analysis on-site of all sample matrices (air, soil, water, and surface wipe) for the presence of toxic industrial chemicals, pharmaceuticals, chemical warfare agents and their breakdown products. This position will require background screening and US citizenship, and participation in medical monitoring. Some travel will be necessary.

Responsibilities:

Prepares and analyzes environmental samples for organic environmental analysis. Performs GC/MS, GC TOF or LC/MS/MS laboratory analysis and data validation as required to maintain laboratory throughput. Uses MassHunter, TraceFinder, MassLynx or other instrument operating software and LIMS to perform data analysis and processing. Performs a variety of analytical testing and is knowledgeable of instrumental theory and techniques.

Screens and logs in samples into LIMS, prepares samples for laboratory analysis.

Performs instrument and laboratory maintenance. Summarizes & records data in official notebooks, orders supplies & maintains a safe working environment. Performs a variety of tasks. Prepares data packages and other reports.

Participates in evaluation process to include set up, operation and monitoring of equipment & apparatus, and more complex experimental procedures involving novel samples.

Works under minimal supervision and reports to the PHILIS Supervisor/Lead Chemist.

Able to travel with mobile laboratories for field work for up to 2-week intervals when needed.

Qualifications:

  • BS in Chemistry or other physical science from an accredited college or university.
  • 6 - 10 years minimum of experience in environmental laboratory operations, with experience in organic environmental analysis
  • Experience with LC/MSMS, GC/MS and/or GC TOF
  • Knowledgeable with LIMS and instrument operating software.
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and laboratory procedures.
  • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Familiar with a variety of analytical chemistry concepts, practices, and standard analytical procedures, such as EPA SW-846 methods.
  • Knowledgeable in quality assurance programs and compliance with NELAP standards.
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
  • Experience in field mobile laboratory operations is a plus.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen, medical monitoring exam, and government background check.
