Sports Medicine Physician
JOB SUMMARY:
The Sports Medicine Physician will serve as primary teaching faculty for the Family Medicine Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal related injuries and sports medicine conditions. This role is designed for a dynamic physician dedicated to supervising FM sports medicine fellows, educating residents, providing high-quality patient care, and contributing to the development of sports medicine within the Family Medicine Residency Program.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical
- Maintain own panel of patients with scheduled patient care time. Patient care time on a weekly basis in the Family Health Center-Biltmore or Family Medicine Satellites.
- Evaluate and manage patients with acute and chronic musculoskeletal related conditions.
- Develop comprehensive treatment plans that may include physical therapy, rehabilitation, and referrals to specialists as needed.
- Perform musculoskeletal exams and procedures, including joint injections/aspirations and musculoskeletal ultrasound.
Resident/Fellow Education
- Participate in teaching activities for residents, fellows, and medical students at the Family Health Center, including family medicine precepting in the Family Health Center
- Conduct didactics, lectures, workshops, and hands-on training sessions on sports medicine topics.
- Provide feedback and evaluations on residents and fellows performance in clinical settings.
Research
- Demonstrate commitment to community-based health sciences and research.
- Pursue scholarly activity, as required of all faculty members by the Department of Family Medicine
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the sports medicine fellowship program.
Administrative
- Participate, based on experience/skills, on committees and work groups as appropriate within the Department and within MAHEC.
- Collaborate with the Sports Medicine Program to enhance the sports medicine curriculum.

SPECIFIED SKILLS
COMPUTER
- Excellent skills in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database applications required.
- Experience using Electronic Medical Records.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE
- Spanish speaking skills preferred.
RESIDENCY PROGRAM
- Commitment to resident and fellowship education and mentorship.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to patients.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journal articles, technical procedures, legal documents, or governmental regulations
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Light - Moderate energy level: Lift and carry 25 - 35 lbs, Push/Pull 50 - 100 lbs (empty bed, stretcher, etc.).
- Occasional (0 - 33% of Workday).

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of a Family Medicine Residency Program.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Teaching experience preferred.
REQUIRED LICENSES:
- Licensure to practice medicine in North Carolina.
- Certification by the American Board of Family Physicians.
- Certification of added qualification in Sports Medicine.
- Appointment in good standing to the medical staff of Mission Health System.
SCHEDULE:
Regular attendance on-site is an essential function of this position. Typical business hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (or flexed to best meet the needs of the clients and/or the Division); 40 hours per workweek; weekend, holiday, or evening coverage is occasionally required. Work hours will need to be flexible in order to respond to special work assignments, or evening activities, as requested by the team leader.
