JOB TITLE: Unit Manager RN - LTCC

DEPARTMENT: Long Term Care Center

REPORTS TO: LTCC Director of Nursing/ LTCC Administrator

JOB SUMMARY

Supervises/monitors overall patient care on a nursing unit (1st Floor, SCU, and/or 2nd Floor) to ensure quality resident care, monitor quality improvement processes and to ensure regulatory compliance.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Current Wyoming licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.

EXPERIENCE

Prior experience with geriatric patients helpful. Experience in psychiatric and/or rehabilitation nursing also useful.

SKILLS

Interest in and understanding of the special needs of the older adult. Has well-developed written and verbal communication skills in order to interpret written instructions, communicate and document effectively. Has well-developed motor coordination and manual dexterity in order to perform psychomotor nursing skills. Able to apply nursing process in problem solving. Able to prioritize appropriately and make sound nursing judgments. Has supervisory skills for immediate supervision of nursing assistants. Maintains confidentiality.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • General duties and responsibilities as defined in the charge nurse job description. Cover charge nurse responsibilities when required.
  • Supervise patient care on the nursing units including daily rounds on the residents. Check boards and follow up as needed; check infection control log and skin books.
  • Identify actual and potential clinical problems and supervise staff in planning and implementing resident care.
  • Report to the Director of Nursing (or Administrator in the absence of Director of Nursing) on a daily basis regarding clinical situations, resident status and personnel issues.
  • Work closely with nursing assistants, observing hands-on care and interpersonal communication with residents and families.
  • Observe nursing care on an informal basis and use clinical situations as an opportunity for teaching new skills.
  • Review residents' medical records to assure accuracy and completeness of the documentation.
  • Supervise narcotic and drug control.
  • Supervise nursing activities and promote improvement in resident care.
  • Evaluate, assist with plans, and organize nursing care according to established policies.
  • Supervise the scheduling of assignments to be consistent with each staff member's education, training and experience.
  • Assist with coverage of absences to ensure adequate staffing on all shifts. Complete call-in slip if not already done by nursing. Update schedule.
  • Give guidance to personnel as needed, discuss progress and needs for improvement with staff, and assist with performance evaluations.
  • Act as resource person and assist the nursing staff with clinical procedures as necessary.
  • Continuously monitor quality improvement and report findings to Quality Assessment Committee.
  • Represent facility on committees as delegated by the Director of Nursing and/or Administrator.
  • Assist with orientation and staff development.
  • Assist with and/or approve time schedules for shift personnel.
  • Is responsible for either the Restorative Nursing Program and/or Skin Program depending on assignment from the Director of Nursing. Each Unit Manager will be responsible for regulatory compliance for one of these areas.
  • Meet monthly with Unit Restorative Aides, Unit Clerks and Bath Aides. Document what was discussed.
  • Attend staff meetings and conferences as requested.
  • Assure that established policies are being implemented.
  • May assist with admissions and pre-admission evaluations.
  • Act on behalf of the Director of Nursing in her absence.
  • Understand and apply the Nursing Process and the Standards of Gerontological Nursing.
  • May be required to perform other duties and responsibilities for which the individual is qualified.
