GSK is currently looking for a Process Development Upstream Senior Scientist to join our team in Rockville, MD. In this role you'll be involved in all aspects of the development of cell culture processes for the manufacture of biopharmaceuticals including initial process screening, optimization and characterization, validation, scale-up and tech transfer to internal or external manufacturing partners.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform bench/pilot-scale laboratory experiments to develop, characterize and /or validate cell culture processes for production of biopharmaceuticals
- Compile, analyze, communicate experimental results; identifies and troubleshoots problems
- Describe experimental results in the form of written reports and presentations
- Work seamlessly within a team
- Laboratory duties as required
- Independently design experiments
- Represent the team in cross functional meetings
- Understands experiments in the broader scope of projects
- Provides SME support for manufacturing
Why you?
Basic Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
- BS/BA Degree in scientific discipline and 4+ years of biopharma/pharma industry experience OR MS Degree in scientific discipline and 2+ years of biopharma/pharma industry experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
- MS in either biological or chemical science or engineering or equivalent technical field of study.
- The candidate must be a highly motivated self-starter with excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a matrix team environment.
- Basic knowledge of statistical science/analysis is highly desired. Hands on experience in process characterization and process development activities and working with small scale bioreactors is desired.
- A thorough knowledge of the workings of large-scale bioreactors, especially aspects concerning mass transfer and mixing, is highly desired.
- Demonstrated achievement in learning new techniques independently

The annual base salary for new hires in this position ranges from $81,770 to $110,630 taking into account a number of factors including work location within the US market, the candidate's skills, experience, education level and the market rate for the role. In addition, this position offers an annual bonus and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program which is dependent on the level of the role. Available benefits include health care and other insurance benefits (for employee and family), retirement benefits, paid holidays, vacation, and paid caregiver/parental and medical leave.
